School of Environment freshmen's admission education activities successfully concluded

In this hopeful September, 2019-Grade freshmen in school of Environment in SCNU started their campus lives. In order to help freshmen integrate into the new campus and scientific research life better, the school of Environment has launched a series of colorful admission education activities, which aimed to help freshmen adapt to the college environment, and build a solid foundation for coming study and research work.

 

First entry into the School: Give you a guide for the new life

 

To help the new graduate students to adapt the new environment better, know more about SCNU and School of Environment, as well as to set preliminary plans for the research career as a graduate student, the Dean and other teacher representatives of the School of Environment visited  the new students to send their greeting. They also took a series of orientations and education activities to give some suggestions for study and research in the coming graduate life.

 

1. Welcome new students and visit their dormitories

 

The graduate orientation for freshmen in the School of the Environment was on 1th September. It was organized by undergraduate and graduate student unions with supports from the school head. The junior students gave warm welcomes to all the freshmen and help them to go through the check-in procedures. All freshmen highly appreciated the effective and patient guidance by the junior students. When all new students were settled down, Dean Guangguo Ying, vice-Dean Laisheng Li, vice-Dean Jianliang Zhao, and vice secretary Huibin Cui visited the new students in their dormitories and chatted with them to know more about their new campus life in SCNU. With the great efforts of everyone in the School of the Environment, the orientation program gave a warm welcome to every new students who left home alone, and made the freshmen to feel warm from the big family of School of Environment.

2. Visit the SCNU campus, Building and laboratories of the School of Environment

To make the new students know more campus culture of SCNU and be familiar with the facilities for study and research, Dr. Yuanyuan Yang and Phd student Dongdong Ma gave a tour to all laboratories in School, and briefly introduced about all the instruments in the lab, laboratory rule and regulations in the morning on September 2nd. It helped the new students to have a general idea about the laboratories. After the lab tour, a campus tour was guided by the Graduate Union. The members from the Graduate Union also gave a brief introduction about campus to help the new students familiar to the campus as soon as possible.

3. Safety Education


Safety education is a requested course for new students. In the afternoon on September 2nd, Miss Lin Gao from Security Office gave a talk about campus safety to all new students. She talked about all kinds of campus safety knowledge. She also asked everyone to obey all student-apartment rules, raise awareness of fire prevention and theft, learn to deal with emergencies, and ensure the safety of personal property. She particularly emphasized on distinguishing telecommunication scams, strictly follow the police of asking for leave, pay close attention to personal safety, as well as improving self-protection awareness and ability.

 

4. Opening Ceremony

 

Opening ceremony for the 2019 graduate students in the School of Environment was grandly held in the morning on September 3nd. School heads, teacher representatives, teachers and students who responsible for graduate work were all present. Dean Guangguo Ying gave a welcome speech for all new students. In his speech, he gave a warm welcome, called for the awareness of environment protection, asked for three requirements including self-confidence, self-discipline and self-improvement for new students. He also encouraged everyone to set up their ambitious goals and focus on research work.

Professor Bo Yan, as a teacher representative, asked everyone can become  the patriotic, dedicated, honest and friendly postgraduates, and work hard on research. He also asked for teamwork in research and life and more communication between teachers and students. At the same time, He said health was important and suggested everyone more exercise after work.

After that, both junior student and new student representative respectively expressed their willingness to study hard, not forget their original intentions, and their goals in SCNU.

The talks from teachers and junior students in the opening ceremony inspired the new students, help the new students to adapt to the new life in campus, and guide the direction for their coming study and life.

5. Lecture on Mental Health

 

Mental health is one of the elements of human health. Mr. Binyuan Su from the Psychological Counseling and Research Center of SCNU gave a lecture on College Students' Adaptation to the freshmen in afternoon on 3nd September. Mr. Su introduced some psychological knowledge in his lecture. He emphasized that graduate students had greater pressure on research and life than undergraduate students did. They were likely to have more psychological problems and more attention should be paid on them.  Students were often shocked by photos and content during the lecture. They deeply realized the importance of mental health. At the same time, Mr. Su also introduced various methods for psychological self-adjustment to maintain a good psychological state and mental appearance.

Professional education: Correcting attitude, mastering methods.

 

The purpose of professional education is to help the new students to know more about their major, management regulations and the training mode for graduate students in School of Environment, and thus to learn some tips for research work. The series of professional education activities gave the new students some ideas about their major in a short time and it was favor to have a good academic morality.

 

 

1. Laboratory Safety Lectures

 

On the morning of September 4, Dr. Yousheng Liu gave a talk for the laboratory safety instruction and occupational health in the morning on 4th September. At the beginning, Dr. Liu presented some cases of accidents in the university labs in recent years, emphasizing the importance of laboratory safety. Subsequently, Dr. Liu introduced the progresses on the SCNU laboratory safety management in recent years by the safety rules and regulations, safety awareness, safety inspection, standardized operation, clothing and behavior, procedures for dangerous goods purchase, and hazardous waste disposal. He highlighted the Regarding the full supervision requirements from purchase, storage, use to dangerous goods disposal. Students had to follow the relevant laboratory safety management systems for national and school, standardize operations, and ensure safety.

2. The Lectures on "How shall we do scientific research as a graduate student?"

In order to help the new students to better understand the scientific research, Dean Guangguo Ying gave a lecture on "How shall we do scientific research as a graduate student" on 6th September. Dean Ying talked about five points in his lecture, including What scientific research is, how to start a research, making plans, experimental design, and researching innovatively. He also gave some suggestions and ideas on the do’s and don’ts in the lab, data analysis, thesis writing and academic ethics. The lectures provided the guidance for their coming research lives. At the same time, He also expressed his expectations to graduate students, hoping graduate students can be diligent, dedicated, responsible, and grateful, develop academic senses for discovery, and create valuable and high-level academic results.

3. Lecture on Graduate School Management Regulations

 

Professor Jianliang Zhao, the vice-dean of the School of Environment, gave a lecture to explain and regulations and management mode of the School of Environment in the morning on 6th September. He introduced the training objectives, teaching management, degree management, student status management, scholarships, graduation requirements, etc. He also leaded the students to study their training plan and program. Besides, Professor Zhao also introduced the colloquiums on the professorial knowledge and graduate forums. He also encouraged students to participate in domestic and international student exchanges. Professor Zhao’s lecture help the new student to have a preliminary understanding of the graduate management system, have a general idea of the study of environmental science study, set the foundation for future professional course learning and academic thesis writing with their supervisors.

Peer Education: Earnest Eyes

On the afternoon of September 6, the Graduate School of the School of Environmental Sciences invited Dr. Master and his fellow doctors to discuss and discuss with the freshmen on several aspects such as study, life, and work to impart experience to the freshmen. Dr. Jie Zhong cautioned freshmen that graduate students should have a sense of literature, scientific research, and initiative, and emphasized that while studying scientific issues, they should continue to read and communicate, and be good at discovering and thinking. Postgraduates such as Ma Dongdong introduced the issues that need attention in postgraduate life from the aspects of professional skills, academic planning, work and life. At the same time, the new students also actively raised their doubts and communicated with the old students in depth. Through the sharing and exchange of experience between old and new students, the new students not only understand how to hone their professional skills, but also clarify the direction of future efforts and become more clear about future goals.

At this point, the 2019 graduate education for freshmen of the School of the Environment has successfully concluded. Through a series of planned, purposeful and organized activities, help freshmen adapt and integrate into the life of graduate students with the best mentality, master academic methods, and strengthen ideals and beliefs in the shortest possible time, so that freshmen can complete the undergraduate to The change of graduate students and the preliminary planning and blueprint for the new life to be started. A new page has been opened, and I wish the graduate students of 2019 with dreams and confidence and move forward!
